Router / ISP Problems

Over the past few weeks my internet connection keeps failing. This is a home network set up with a Netgear router (approx. 3 years old). So i have 3 pc's sharing the network wirelessly, here's the symptoms;

1. in the router set up, it says it is connected to the internet - no problem. It has an IP address assigned etc..
2. the pc's can't connect to the internet, but they can access shared files between them wirelessly via the home network
3. i have to reboot the router on a daily basis - normally when i get home from work and the kids say 'we can't on the internet again' :bonk:
4. once re-booted it works fine - until the next day!

i'm thinking it could be the router somehow as i've not changed any internet settings at all. Or could it be a dsl filter on one of the phone sockets causing disruption? Or could it my ISP chucking me offline for some reason?

thanks in advance techie people

I'd run a wireless scan to see if there is a neighbour on the same channel as that can make the router throw a wobbly. Also check if there are any firmware updates.

My netgear started doing that. The wireless side had gone on the wonk. Lucky I had another wireless router so I use that for wireless and the netgear for the wired side of things.

Quick check is to ping the router. If you can't ping it then it's probably the wireless at fault. If you can and can't ping further on like google then it could also be an issue with the ISP.

Faulty filter generally leads to problems with noise on the phone line. Might be worth unplugging the suspect filter and seeing if the problem goes away.

cheers Suz. You're such a fountain of knowledge :geek:

The wireless scan was one thing i thought about a couple of weeks ago... and then completely forgot to do it... as there's prob 5 or 6 networks i can pick up near me.

i've got a spare belkin router here in the office too, i might give that a bash at home

cheers neil. i didn't want to mention the ISP thing in my OP as i have changed provider and the changeover was just this week. At first, i thought it was the ISP causing mischief after i told them i was leaving - but since the changeover the problem has been the same - so it kind of rules them out of the equation.

I'll experiment with the other router and i'm sure i've got some filters around the place somewhere.

if the problem is on your line or exchange it may not rule it out, chances are you still use the same wholesale exchange kit depending on what ISPs you use(d).

it may be worth getting them to run a test.

As you have a spare Belkin try that first, to rule out the Router. Try it plugged into the telephone master socket (where the phone line enters the house) to eliminate internal extension cables. (The phone will often work when broadband doesn't, because phone traffic is much less complex. So, a working phone is not necessarily a sign of good wiring.)

If that works try setting the Netgear back to Factory Defaults and set it up again, (if you understand how to do this. Don't mess with it unless sure you know how to rescue it!)

Change the channel from Auto to 6 or 11.

Swap the DSL micro-filter as that is a common point of failure and they're cheap to buy.

Depending who your telephone line provider is (not necessarily the same as the broadband provider) ask them for a line test. BT will tell you categorically that there is nothing wrong with your line, whether or not that is the case. And they will tell you that there's a steep charge to ask them to visit to test your internal cables. However, you will often find a BT van turns up in the street a couple of days later to work on the local green box, and I've never known them to make the charge.

Good uck!
