I have been hired to photograph a crew at Henley Royal Regatta tomorrow, i will be using my D40 and 55-200mm VR (that makes me sound so cheap) does anybody have any tips for me? Anything at all will be welcomed greatly Thanks. Daniel
As with most sports, use shutter priority to make sure that you freeze action or control the amount of blur, if you choose to show it.
If the day is very overcast and you are the tele end (F5.6 right?) you might have to raise ISO quite a bit. At higher ISOs your images will get very noisy.
Shoot raw to minimize noise in PP if you can/want.
Thanks edumad, i doubt it will be overcast looking at tomorrows forecast, and I would prefer it to be as wide open as possible to get the out of focus backgrounds, will that be ok if i use aperture priority?
I'd advise to use aperture priority to be honest! Use the lens wide open, that way it'll be at the fastest shutter speed possible for decent exposure. Then if you want a bit of motion blur, slow the shutter speed down.
Watch where the sun is, it can be an absolute nightmare dealing with reflections! Watch where it's going, and aim to have the sun as behind you as possible, so the rowers' faces are illuminated, not in shadow! And I'd suggest AI Servo to ensure you get it in focus. Here's one of mine:
Lots of good advice to be had here, surprised that no-one suggested you went out very early on the day and practiced before the shoot on crews warming up - so much to gain from your OWN experience at the job, then you will be much more confident to take the shots you want for the guys who have hired you.
Thanks for all your help, sorry for my late reply, i didnt get back till today, shame about my crew getting nocked out on wednesday though. I went in the follow launch which was very good so i filmed the whole race as well as getting about 100 shots. Thanks again and what club are you from Chris?
