hello

managed to get a good deal on a well looked after D2 HS .The reason i like this camera is its a "worker" , Well built and will do all i need for street/urban photography. The pixel count is not that much of a issue as i never fell for the "Ive got the most " debate :cool: And i took some test pics and found i was getting good 10x 8 without any issues.

Any way....... I really fancy some "Old Skool" glass. I hate flash and hate camera bags even more (Thats another reason for the D2, i dont need to carry another battery !)

I have a Budget of £200 -300 MAX :'( due to new baby.
I would love a Zeiss with conversion but i doubt it !

My local dealer is going for the 50/ Niffty at a good price. It works a treat and i do not need anything LONGER. But...... i would love the extra width.

what i would love is either a lovely small zoom that will give me the equiv of 28mm (after its stuck on the DSLR) to about 100mm

If i stick with a prime 24/28 I worry that it might not cover me for street portrait type work.
My style is to "get stuck in" I can work close.

I really do not want to carry another lens. I HATE KIT !! I just want to shoot.
\
I also want to get as fast a lens as possible.
Here is the good bit. I am not a Brand Junkie. I just want to get it right first time !!!

Many thanks

Luke

Sigma 18-125mm
Nikkor 28-105mm: not very fast, about £100. Paired with...
Tamron ƒ/2.8-4 17-35mm: quite cheap, but much more bulky than a prime.

The Sigma 15-30mm EX DG is a cracking lens or, if you want a prime, I can recommend the Sigma 28mm f2.8 EX DG, very sharp, not sure what price these are going for on the second hand market now, but I paid £150 for my 15-30 and just £60 for my 28mm. If your budget will allow (£400) take a look at the Nikon18-200mm VR, if you hate carrying gear around this is the one I'd go for.

its crop the d2 right?

tamron 17-50 f2.8 then

good range, sharp enough lens, handles flare ok and its f2.8

Yes.. I need to possibly start around the 17-20 to allow for the real difference on the camera. As long as i have a MIN of 28 -30 then i am fine. I dont need to get over 100mm

Thanks for your help so far

For the D2Hs I'd got for a 17-35mm f/2.8 as that equates to about 24-50mm in 'real-life' and would be ideal for street work...it's also really well-balanced on the camera...

Of course finding a good 17-35 Nikkor for £300 would be a good trick...add a few hundred and try again...

sticking my neck out here cos only just got one and not used very much

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 - 4.5...........about £150 here

Not a bad idea - coupled with a D2Hs, it'd be fine, I'd think...especially if working on a budget and for the images you've described...

I am checking out the Tokina's as well

I might venture down to my local S/H camera shop and have a "play" with some of their stock.

Like some one quoted... its worth me getting a great lens as possible and changing bodies every few years.

Thanks

If you're definitely thinking of upgrading in a couple of years, think about whether you intend to stick with your current DX format or whether you'll go D3s/x...
Makes more sense to buy FX-compatible lenses now rather than have to upgrade those as well later on...

Good point !
I almost live in my local S/H camera shop ! And do tend to go through Phases of buying different stuff, As long as i dont lose a absolute fortune i can handle the loss.

I can imagine the next "jump" will be into what ever is good this year in about 2 years time ,but still nikon as i prefer their bodies. Even though i think Canon is easier to source good lens !

there is a Nikon 18-70 dx on this forum for sale (£125.00) but not sure if its fast enough to use in low light ?

Probably not - for the work you've described, you'll be wanting an f/2.8 as a minimum, I'd have thought...

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 - picked mine up for £160 off ebay. Boxed and mint condition. Works great with D2X and is probably the sharpest lens I've used aside from my 85mm f/1.8. Does magazine covers very well....

For your budget you could get 18-70 and 50 1.8. Best of both worlds?

never want to carry another lens. I have done the bad back thing for years... The "which " lens to use thing.

By limiting myself to a simple small quality zoom , with no flash etc I have to think more about capturing each shot more ..

The old Nikon kit lens 18-70 was a fantastic bit of kit

I have a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 stuck on to one of mine all the time - great combination.

Starting to steer towards a S/H Tokina if i can find a good 2.8. Spent some time yesterday looking and chatting and just about everyone told me the Tokinas are better all round than sigma and tamron.

Tokinas are very well built, although many of the Sigma EX lenses are solid too, as are the Tamrons. Don't discount the f/2.8 Tamrons (17-50mm and 28-75mm) because they have truly exceptional glass for what they cost. I can't tell the difference between my Tamron 17-50mm and the Canon 17-40mm that I used to use on my old cameras.

Agreed about the Nikon 18-70mm too; good focal range, good build quality and brilliant IQ from a lens that was a 'kit' offering. Okay, not amazingly fast at f/3.5-4.5 but they only cost £100 or so on the used market.

N.B. ApertureUK have both the Tamrons in at £230 each, used. Good buys.
