I'd had a pretty rotten day today, what with having a peak in the M.E. and the vampire in for more blood work so decided to cheer myself up by taking a few self portraits tonight.

After dinner I had a little more energy than earlier so set up the tripod beside the bed, put the 50mm on, fitted the flash and the new lumiquest softbox, connected it all up and then had a rest for a little while.

Booted up EOS utility and thats when I realised that 50mm doesn't work out so well on with the canon crop factor, its fine for what I bought it for (torso and head portraits and close head and shoulders) but I can't keep the tripod in reach and get the framing I want.
It's a shame as I was looking forward to trying the softbox on the hand shot I have had in mind for some time.

Oh well.. thats one tamron 17-50mm on the wish list..

Still we had a storm today and that gave me a chance to try out the video on the 500D, not bad once you get used to the controls.

A wireless shutter release might be worth the purchase. Shouldn't set you back too much and will help you beyond an arm's reach of the tripod.

Just acquired a Tamron 17-50mm, was described as having a "mechanical fault" from MPB photographic, took the plunge for £60. First try gave a fault, second attempt when stopped down worked OK and has worked flawlessy since. Lovely lens to use..

As Ian mentioned EOS utlity, I'm assuming that he was shooting tethered, so a wireless release is academic in this case - the camera's operated from the computer.

My mistake

Is it possible to extend the tether cable so the laptop is further from the camera? I'm assuming it's just a USB connection so should be cheap to use a USB extension.

Yes it is Jamie, I have one, but my arms won't extend to adjust the ball head on the tripod ... lol.

It's a good excuse to get more glass, and is covering a focal range I'm missing

Excuses, excuses, excuses, but sounds like a good reason. Anyway enjoy your new glass when it arrives!

5m is the max range of usb for full speed transfer. Any longer and you need to put a powered hub in the line, but I shoot tethered at times with lightroom on a laptop and it works a treat.

I use a 5m repeater type extension on mine, that works fine with the original canon USB lead
