saving outlook messages and contacts

XP on my laptop has decided it's time to curl it's toes up, so i'm going to nuke the lappy and give it a fresh install of Vista premium.

For some reason though Outlook 2003 won't let me save the mails from personal folders or the inbox and I can't get it to save my address book either.

This is quite frustrating as I need to capture that info before FDISK does it's stuff.

How should I be doing this?

Just to cover the basics, have you used the File > Import and Export > Export to a file option? This will then allow you to re-import them afterwards.

You may want to consider using IMAP in future if your mail host allows it, as your emails are then stored on the server until deletion so you never risk losing them.

(Side point: I didn't realise anyone still used FDISK!)

yup, been all through the export options, each option db,csv,tsv, pst etc all tell me that outlook can't translate.................seems strange to me as i've exported as csv before on other machines.

Can you not just copy the PST (personal folder) file? That's what I've always done in the past when moving between computers.

Theres a big file which stores all of the outlook data.. the file is called "Outlook.pst".

The file is normally located here...

C:\Documents and Settings\(YourUser)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

When you want to put it on a new computer or whereever just drop it into the same place.

I know this works from XP-to-XP but Im not sure going XP-to-Vista, but if you have that file you have everything in your outlook.

Vista install is under way even though the initial licence key validation failed to verify the install
