Hi I want to scan some pictures and text from Digital Photographer magazine and post it on my website. The magazine is bigger then the scanner. How should I go about this for a.) best legibility of text, and b.) smallest file size? Any particular combination of dpi and scaling that I should try? Before I add the magazine to my website, do I have to get permission from the magazine editor? Any advice, much appreciated, thanks :)

You would need permission from the publishers of the magazine in order to reproduce a copy of their publication on your site. And by a happy coincidence the same people should be able to provide you with an electronic copy of the magazine, saving you any hassle of scanning your own copy in.

Personally I'd scan the page across the length of the scanner (if that makes sense) so that you have an overlap from the two resulting images. As long as they are scanned at the same settings (72dpi should be fine) then you should be able to line them up afterwards.

You might want to fire off an email to to the editor just in case, but I would have thought as long as you credit the mag and link to their site in close proximity to the scan then you should be ok.

Strictly speaking this is a breach of copyright, for which you need permission. The magazine publisher holds the rights to the magazine pages, but it's quite likely that they do not hold rights to either the text or the images for further reproduction if they were not produced by employed staff members.

However, depending on what it is you want to do, if you ask nicely and offer a credit and links, the editor's word should swing it for you. And as suggested, if they see it as good publicity, they might even send you a nice file to put up :) Best make it sound good though, or you could get told to pi55 off!

Richard.

I believe you can copy up to 10% of a publication for research purposes but I doubt if you could stretch this to a website you are making.
