School sercurity

Yesterday? Was it copied and pasted from somewhere? It would be good form to include the source in such occasions :)

The school my daughter went to last year has its outer gates locked at 15 minutes past the start time, access to the school is then by a remote controlled metal gate with a security camera pointed towards it. The gate is situated next to a brick wall so there's no way anyone can shoot through the reception entrance either.

Once past that gate there is an intercom system for the reception as well as the reception door having a remote release and it's also locked at 15 minutes past the start of school. There is a 6ft metal fence, or a wall at some places, running all the way round the school as well. It wouldn't stop someone who was hell bent on destruction, but it would certainly hinder most people for long enough to make an emergency call.

It's such a shame that we have to have all these security measures for a learning centre, it does end up 'prison like' but they've taken the measures seriously. It's also such a shame that there are still people out there who can do such a thing. I used to belong to a gun club/shooting range but it eventually closed after the extra laws about handguns came in. The crimes committed involving guns are almost always using illegally owned guns anyway. All the guns in the club were in a locked room with ammunition in a separate room and all the guns and ammunition had to be signed out and signed back in again.

But how would any of those security measures make a scrap of difference in the 'usual' American school shooting situation, where the person who does the shooting is a student there? These physical security measures can only provide (limited) protection against strangers.

Somewhat predictably, the NRA are now calling for armed security in schools.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

In true NRA style, they're shocked by gun crime, and blame the government for not permitting more guns in more places.
