hey there, we're off to scotland end of next week for 2 weeks, wooooooo :D hopefully catch some good autumn colours and the rut! apart from the many thousands of landscape shots i will be taking, looking for recommendations on the best wildlife locations

we're staying near skye 1st week and doing that area up the west coast, the over to braemar way for the 2nd to include pretty much all north east

so then, what's everyone's advice for:

red deer (guessing linn of dee way, tis where we saw them last year)
golden eagle
red squidgers
pine martens
otters
sea eagle
birds of prey
and any other lovely stuff

comment as you please

cheers

The world is your Oyster really there but from Letterfearn you could drive over the Rattagan hill road down to Kylerhea.

There's a forestry commission place - Kylerhea Otter Haven hide - which would be a great for seals, otters and your eagles although the sea / golden eagles are pot luck same as anywhere.

I'm sure you would find something about it on the net.

If your Hell bent on the Eagles then it might be worth a guided trip where you will be 'taken' to the locations. Mull is the place for Sea Eagles really but it's a bit far South from you.

Thanks matey :) got my eye on kylerhea looks good :) anyone else with other recommendations?surely there's others who have been up here ;)

Linn of Dee for the red deer, though you can see them anywhere with luck but 100% definite sighting at the head of Loch Muick between Ballater and Braemar. And Deeside generally for the red squirrels. Pine Martin are also resident on Deeside but I've been going there for years and never seen one.

Inchnadamph in Sutherland (name means Place of the deer and it's living with them).
Really good for Golden Eagles too.

Shetland is the place to go for otters.

Right enough, bit hard to reach here in a day but well worthy of consideration. I am from the Scottish highlands and have been up here for three years, certainly the most impressive scenery I have seen in Scotland. Wildlife is pretty unique, no deer, foxes and on the island I live on there is no rats. Strange.

Drew,

On your way back from Skye. you will find some 'street' wildlife on the road between Kyle of Lochalsh and Plockton at the village of Duirnish; there are usually Highland Cattle roaming the main (only) street.

Also, in Kyleakin, go behind the Community Centre where you will find a few Heron.

For other 'street' wildlife, try Whitfield in Dundee - but that's probably not the kind of 'wildlife' you are looking for. ;)

There are wild goats around the area too - we've seen them regularly a little way south from Eilean Donan Castle. The east coast of Skye is reckoned to be good for Sea Eagles. For non wildlife stuff Eilean Donan itself is good, if a bit chocolate box-y, and the commando memorial is wonderful on a bright sunny day.

Just remembered there are llamas in a field on the left just past Shiel bridge but before kinloch lodge hotel. Its just as you turn round the bend and loch duich comes into view.
