Hi, Im not overly tech-headed so could do with a little bit of a poit in the right direction....

Im upgrading memory from my 2GB series unknown SD card....
I have a Canon Eos550D and I'm looking for a 32GB card, I'd heard that its best to get as high a series card as possible...10 if i can get it....but then there are all the other variables which start to confuse me.....can someone please help by explaining the following for me;

Write Speed
Read Speed
although I imagine they are what the say they are, but....Speed Rating?

and advising on what looks the best deal from these;

SD Cards
 
Have a look at the table on Wikipedia, called "x rating" for details.

I also have a 550D and use several makes of SD card, mostly Class 10, essential if you want to use video. The only benefit of the 133x would be maybe squeezing more shots in a burst.

As far as the best deal on that page, then the My Memory own brand at 100x to 133x looks good very good value

Just remember you will be limited by your camera regardless of the speed of your card

My point was that the only real benefit of faster cards is pushing your camera's burst rate as far as it can be taken.
 
are you shooting video? If yes, then a fast card is better.

Do you use USB2 or 3 and a high end card reader to transfer from camera to computer? Do you do a lot of files at once? Do you mind sitting and waiting for files to transfer? If yes to all, then a faster card may be better.

In the cases of the above, look for a Class 6 or higher (25 MB/s), ideally class 10.

If you are only doing stills (or largely doing stills) and not doing multiple hundreds in a batch then a class 4 or 6 will be fine. Personally, I do stills only and I'm not a pro so time isn't money for me. I shoot a 16 GB class 6 because they are inexpensive anymore. I would go with 2 16's before I did 1 32. In fact, I shoot with 1 16 and 2 4's as backup. I've never needed a backup.

I went from a class 4 card with my 550D to a class 10 card. The difference I found was that I could burst up to about the mid 50's instead of the 30 odd shots from a class 4. For just normal shooting of single or few shots it doesn't help that much. I've got 2 Duracell 16gb class 10 from 7dayshop.com. Great reliable, fast card thats a good price too.

A side note: Don't, whatever you do, be tempted by those 'bargain' non-branded SD cards you can find online. I made the mistake of getting one. Testing it revealed errors immediately on the first card and then on the replacement one as well. You don't want several gigs of pics to disappear into nothingness...
 
As mentioned by someone else, I wouldn't go for 1 32gb card.

Use 2 16gb or even 4 8gb cards. Imagine going out for a days shoot, and you take several hundred shots all on your 32gb card...and then it gets corrupted or you lose it or damage it.

Best to spread your shots out over a few cards so you avoid the potential heartache of losing the whole lot.

As for the make...Sandisk are probably the top make. But Transcend are pretty good and are very good value for money.

Hi Scott

To add to what others have said, I wouldn't use a very large capacity card, I'd be using a few 4 or 8gb cards - depending if you are shooting RAW and or Video.

I use Sandisk cards and would recommend them everytime, I'd go for the new Ultra or Extreme III cards (same speed), maybe the new Extreme cards, depending on budget ...

I'd also invest (if you haven't already) in a card reader, as this can significantly decrease the download time

If there isn't a huge price difference, I'd be tempted to go with 4 x 8 GB cards instead. Peace of mind if nothing else.

Tony (Kipax) on here is a pro shooter and in his thread on here re CF cards, he uses 4GB cards with his 1D mk IV, and is happy to change them regularly so he doesn't loose much if a card is lost / stolen /
corrupted.

I've recently been looking into what cards to get and have decided on several class 6 8gb cards. That seems to be the general consensus
