Second lens

Hi I am just starting out got a Nikon d3100 with kit lens am just wondering what a reasonably priced good second lens someone could recommended only plan on owning 2-3 lenses cheers
 
It all depends on what you want to use it for. No point in recommending a long zoom if you want to get into architectural photography. Give us a few hints.
 
Yeah sorry bout that it woul probably be some outdoor photography of landscapes and towns maybe a bit of nature cheers should of elaborated more
 
The best plan is to use just the standard lens until you find out what its limitations are for your photography. Once you've worked out what those limitations are, then a buy a lens to overcome those limitations.

If for landscape and towns, you need a lens that "gets more in", then you will need a wide angle lens, if for nature you need to "get closer", then you need a telephoto

Some good advice here, but if you're on a "must get lenses" quest, which I was when I first got my D40 (otherwise why buy an SLR heheh) then IMHO it's hard to go wrong with the 18-55mm VR kit lens, the 55-200mm VR tele-zoom, and the 35mm f1.8 prime. With those three in your bag, you'll be able to figure out what works best for you, and if you buy used you'll likely lose very little money if you decide to sell on. 55-200 can be had for around £110-120 used, and the 35 maybe £130-140, so should fit in with your budget.

If you want to know more about the 35/1.8 it's worth digging around the forum, you'll find many people (me included!) absolutely love it, it's the one lens I'd never get rid of. Unless I went full frame, but that's a completely different kettle of fish :)
 
The kit lens you've already got is pretty wide, if you go much wider than that then it becomes less about "getting it all in" and more changing the kinds of pics you take. Some rare good advice from Ken Rockwell...

Ultra wide lenses are not cheap either, the Sigma 10-20 is about as cheap as it gets(although a very good lens from most accounts) at around 400 euro.

Agreed... also they're a pain in the neck to use properly! I have the Sigma and still find myself ending up with vast amounts of nothing (and/or my own feet) in my UWA pics, even when trying to force perspectives... but they're getting better :)
