My current lens collection consists of an 18-55mm, an 18-105mm, a 50mm and a 70-300mm.

Now obviously there is some cross over there, but I have got quite a good range of focal length. My question is, is the 18-55 redundant or does it have any benefit over the 18-105? It is not significantly smaller or lighter and it covers the same range and has the same aperture values. I've only ever really used it when using a polarising filter or for macro as all my attachments are 52mm rather than the 67 of the 18-105.

The other consideration is that as a kit lens, the 18-55 doesn't have great appeal, and there fore has little second hand value anyway?
 
You can get the 18-105 as a kit lens if I recall. Their wont be much advantage of using the 105 over the 55.

I also have both these lenses and don't see any significant difference in IQ between them. you could probably sell the 18-55 and get a 50mm/f1.8 similar money.
 
Hmm, decisions, decisions. I had an 18-55 kit lens to start with. Ended up getting a 100-400L, so I decided to get a lens to fill in the gap between the 55 and 100. I decided on a Sigma 18-125mm and sell the 18-55. From the day it went I realised I'd made a mistake. I should of kept it and got something to fill the gap instead. The sigma is great from about the 50-100 range but suffers a bit either end. Just ordered an 18-55 mk2 and got a 55-250 as well. Can never have too many lenses.
 
You could always sell the 18-105? I'm not 100% sure but you might get a bit more for that than you will for the 18-55. The difference between 55mm and the 70mm of your 70-300 will only be a couple of paces forward or back

:thumbsdown: I don't see any great benefit in having lenses that overlap in their focal range.
