Is there anywhere I can take my 40D to in Leicester for a sensor clean, I have used a blower with some sucess but I don't want to risk wet cleaning myself.

Thanks

Try Youngs in Belvior St.I twice took my D50 in and it was cleared of the spots while I waited.I might have been lucky, but it is worth a go.
I won,t say how much i was charged, but it was a lot less than I expected.

Sadly can't recommend Jessops... young guy offered to clean my D700 with a blower brush from the drawer. Whilst offering to do it he stood wiping the brush across his hand several times palying with it as we chatted! No thanks!

Why do you think that the young shop assistants in Youngs will be able to clean your sensor any better than you could ? It's not difficult to do yourself. Have a look @ this old thread.

I'm beginning to wonder considering some of the horror stories... I have used a blower (but I don't have the rocket) This seems to have been reasonable effective. Will do some test shots soon to take another look.

I have to say, regarding Youngs, they are one of the oldest established and respected photography shops in Leicester.

They do not have large turnover of staff etc, I have known Michael Woodford, the manager for over thirty years, both he and his staff have more knowledge in their little finger than anyone at Jessops.

It is a pleasure to deal with people like this, how often can you say that after visiting Jessops and even Jacobs, both of which started many years ago in Leicester.

rant over...

do agree with cleaning the sensor yourself though, it's not difficult at all, the more you do it the easier it becomes. Imagine you spend £30 getting it cleaned, it's possible the first time you change your lens it can get another stubborn bit of dirt appear and your back to square one.

Sensors are harder to damage than you think, take the plunge, have a go, you will be fine.

The cost of my sensor clean at Youngs was nothing like the prices mentioned on here.I suppose I might have been lucky with the type of dirt on the sensor, but I had the problem twice in six months and both times it was a five minute job for the man at Youngs to clean it.It was the manager that did the cleaning for me.

This is what i wrote in the original thread

"For £19 you could have bought 100 pec pads & Eclipse Lens and CCD Cleaning Fluid (59m) from warehouse express Thats enough to clean your sensor 100 times.............Er no contest, it aint rocket science"

These are exactly the same as Youngs use & it would still only take you or Mark 5 mins to clean your own sensor's

hahaha, i would have swiftly exited too!

as to the op's question, just do it yourself, i've done my D3 quite a few times now and it's really easy.

I wasn't having a bash @ Youngs cameras by the way. I too find them great to deal with & have on many occasions done so.

Point taken. But if you were like me and useless at fixing things.I would much rather have someone who knows what they are doing cleaning my sensor.
If I was shown how to do it by someone who knew what they were doing, it might be different.

okay was in town earlier so nipped in Youngs and asked for a price on sensor clean for a 40d. I was quoted £56.95 inc vat.
I suppose if you just went in and asked for a price they are going to cover themselves if they don,t know how bad it is.
I took in my camera then took a photo to show the mark on the image. The manager then said he would have a look to see what he could do but did not promise anything. He then took the camera in to the back of the shop and returned after about five minutes.I then took another photo outside with plenty sky as background and hey presto the smudge had gone.
I don,t really want to say what I was charged but it was a nominal fee.It would not be fair on Youngs to have someone demanding to have their sensor cleaned at the price I paid, if it turns out to be a much more difficult clean than mine was.

I guess I have a go myself although my college tutor (Andy Tatler @ Rawlins College) says that he never wet cleans his sensor (blower every time) guess he has never had anything really stubborn.

Rawlins, my old school...

It has to be stubborn for a blower not to shift it. I've wet cleaned my MKIIN several times, but never the 40D always the blower shifts it, and the camera is 3 years old. If the dirt does not show on the pics then my moto is let it alone.

Fair enough Stuart, I've used my blower on my 40D and it seems fine. I'l hang on for a bit now.
