Sensor Cleaning

Sorry if there is already a thread for this, I couldnt find it...

Anyway after being disappointed with the a sensor clean done by a local camera store I'm lookng to buy a kit to do it myself.

Can someone recommend a good kit or any other information that may be handy for cleaning a sensor.

I've got the lenspen loupe kit and some wet swabs from speed graphic which was about £15

Not had to clean my d90, but a mate did use one of the swabs for his d3100 and was happy with it.

That's interesting, how well does it work, will it handle say a water mark or an oil spec or just light/loose dust?

To answer these points with a minimum level of intelligence,
I had first to look at your profile and… surprise! we share
quite some Nikon and Mac gear but not the software (which
is irrelevant here).

I've been using that product on my sensors, front and back of
all my lend (when needed) with the greatest satisfaction since
years now.

No fuss, no blood, sweat or tears and no wet stuff… but not cheap!

Thanks, so no smudging or marks left on the sensor? as mentioned in the link above I have read to avoid the gel sticks but that of course may not have been the eyelid stuff.

Assume it's worth geting some kind of loupe no matter what solution?
 
I use the Eyelead splodgy stick too and its quite good.
For some reason the earlier ones were not recommended for Sony sensors but now they are universal (think they may have been a bit too sticky on Sony).
Seem to remove all manner of rubbish so far with ease.
 
Thanks guys I may give it a go then if I can find a stockist, wex dont seem to have them.
 
Actually found them on Amazon but read a couple of the reviews and it's put me off again, a few people said it has lifted the IR of the sensor (mostly with nikon).
 
I've cleaned several Canon and Nikon sensors over the years, mainly as a result of driving/shooting in very dry conditions on safari. I carry a minimal kit with me when I've over there. Have a look on eBay. There is a kit of 'solvent', wipes and applicators, mode of plastic, that gets the job done fine. It is a tad scary first time, and ideally you want to be in dust free conditions as close as possible. I assume you know to shoot a pale wall and check for marks on the images? I've never had a single problem doing the cleaning to be honest, but I am careful and follow the instructions. Check if your sensor needs specific liquid. I have a vague recollection that my D700 needed on sort not the other supplied, so D800 may be the same. Sorry, I can't remember the supplier. I doubt there's much difference.

More than likely by people that are just to heavy handed. I don't press down hard at all. Just a slight dab and pull off at an angle.

I'm sure if you press down really hard and pull it straight back up again it could do some damage.
 
I believe most of the issues of damage come from the cheap Chinese counterfeit versions of the Eyelead stick.
I was going to order one from Amazon, but noticed it was to be sent from China.
No thanks !
If I knew it was a genuine German made one, I would get one.
 
I use the orange Sony version on my Fujis, not had any problems. I don't press hard, just a dab.
