SEO - Content on homepage

How important is it to have textual content on your homepage.

Reason I ask, is that I'm thinking about seperating my site into two distinct halves, portraits and weddings. Therefore the front page would have little else other than two links, resulting on having little for the GoogleBots to munch on.

splash screens are generally frowned upon these days.

is there a reason why you dont want to just have the 2 options on a menu as you would normally?

I'm of the opinion (and it could be the wrong one) that clients that are looking for portraits want a portrait photographer, and B&Gs want a wedding photographer i.e they are looking for specific services.

Ideally this would mean two different sites - and this may be the solution in the future. However, at the moment, I just want to seperate the paths taken by a potential client as soon as they hit my site.
