Serious Distortion Help

Hi all, totally flummoxed by what I'm seeing and looking for some answers / help. I was out at the coast yesterday doing some long exposure stuff. Normally I use a Sigma 10-20mm with an ND110 filter, but yesterday I was plating around with my Nikon 18-70mm kit lens. Found it useful recently in isolating objects. While it was on decided to do some more wide angle stuff. Was pleased with he results until I got home and started looking more closely. I'm used to getting barrel distortion on the 10-20 and used to dealing with it - but was not expecting what I am seeing in the following shot (unprocessed as yet other than shrinking it down for these pages):

Seems like towards the centre of the lens I'm getting barrel distortion but to the outside possibly none or possibly a bit of pin-cushion distortion. Totally at a loss to try and explain this.

The kit I used for this was a Nikon D300, Nikkor 18-70mm, B+W Circular Polariser (67mm), step up ring, B+W ND110 (77mm). The shot was taken at 18mm, f22, 120 seconds and ISO 200.

So thats the first part but equally flummoxed as to how to post process it away. I've had a play with the distortion filter in CS3 but it just makes everything wobbly, rather than flat and sharp like its supposed to be, any ideas?

Thanks a lot

Try PT lens, a plug-in for PS and PSE. It recognises each lens and applies the necessary correction. It can also do perspective, vignetting and chromatic aberation corrections.

You can try it out free on 10 images - $25 to purchase. I have just run your image through and it now looks like this (I haven't straightened the horizon).

Takes about 5 seconds!

CS4 has lens correction, but CS5 will have a better version.

Been a few years since I used it, but I could've sworn the free Nikon software had lens correction built in.

I think it is only the expensive Capture NX that does that - otherwise I wouldn't have bought PTlens.

tidal effects i think...:D
