Is it possible to set the aperture by using the lens aperture ring rather than the lcd on a Nikon CPU lens does anyone know

yes - it is on the D200.

Buried somewhere in the menu options is an option to change via Aperture ring rather than front or rear dial. IIRC its something like Sub Command dial -> aperture ring and you can flip between the two.
 
This discusses use of non-CPU lenses... Unsure if it's of help to you regards using the apreture ring on CPU ones, it may do???

I do have a non-cpu lens which I set with the function button. Having enjoyed for many years a manual Spotmatic I enjoy setting the aperture via the lens and am looking to repeat it with my 35-70 cpu lens
