Setting up an online portfolio...

Hi. I wondered if anyone could give me some general tips and rules when it comes to online portfolio? How many images should I include, what are the most appealing and compelling designs? Etc...

My first attempt at a portfolio is in my signature. I'm a little unsure how to make a good portfolio. (And I'm talking about the website here, although I appreciate that "going out and taking good photos" will always help a portfolio :D ).

Thanks.

I'd say some of what you have there looks pretty good...

This is just my own opinion, but regarding the sliding 'frames' that you have for your different categories - would it be an idea to have something similar for the actual photos as well? It might help keep the overall look and feel the same, rather than having a dirty great scrollbar down the side of the frame... Like I say, just my 2p worth...

Ahh I think you're looking at my website, as opposed to my portfolio itself, but I'd love to hear feedback on that too... :)

Erm, they're actually for albums, as opposed to categories, if we're talking about the same thing? You mean when you click on them, seeing something similar for the photos? a sliding thing? I've had lots of problems with this. I've tried setting something up, which is along the lines of what you're talking about. Although I'm not quite sure I understand you fully...what are you imagining I should do?

Thanks for the reply :)

Oops! Just looked at your Portfolio site too... why separate the two?

Yeah, you have four overlapping images on the front page on your website, and if you move the mouse over one of the images, the other 3 move out of the way... Navigation between albums is done with the arrow to the right of the page, yes?

What I was suggesting was continuing that style for the images in each album, if possible, so that the individual thumbnails overlap in a similar fashion. If you move the mouse over the thumbnail, the other images move out of the way (as they do for the albums)... and if you click on the the revealed thumbnail, the large image appears as usual...

Sorry, I don't know if that's any clearer!

Ahh I see! That's very interesting! In theory it'd be possible for albums with between 4 and maybe 10 or 15 photos. But with some of the albums (go up to perhaps 50 shots, some of the photojournalism stuff), it'd be a bit time consuming and in practical. I'll have a little play around with your idea though, see if I could get it to work. I do, however, like having a little separation between albums and the photos in album.

(And I have seperated portfolio and main site, because the portfolio is meant to give an instant, quick and easy way to get a feel for my work and photography. Tell what I do etc, without too much effort....)

catdaddy the 2 sites are not seperate except on tp

they are linkined in with the site so are not seperate

a few quick things i notice on your site

1. the font is not the best especially at the bottom it kind of throws me off and have to concentrate hard to see the font

2. the i like the idea of the artistic photo on the home gallery but me personally i would change it to one of the portrait pics but that is just my opinion
