I spent a lovely day working with my new flash system and tethered camera. The artichoke I will savor later. I have produced both color and black and white versions, both have their attributes. Which do you prefer and why?

I prefer the black and white picture as the colours don't distract you from the structure of the vegetable. I love artichoke on a salad!!

It seems to have been a productive day, Marie!

It is fascinating to see how the chrominance values, in the first take,
are supporting the realism of the artichoke in this sunny rendition.

OTH, the second looks like it is based only on the luminance values
and it puts emphasis on the design and details of the head.

Very harsh without exaggerating the contrast, the light sources and
reflection are well balance… you must have done something right!

REVISITED

I said "sunny rendition" but you said "new flash"!
It really doesn't feel like flash… again, you must
have done something right! (y)

Thank you Gil for having a look and commenting. I have new to me Profoto D1's and they make my life so much easier. BTW, I enjoyed eating the artichoke last night.

Thank you for your critique. I was hard pressed to decide on a favorite rendition. I may print both.

Beautiful tones and shapes in the black and white version. The white background is massively distracting though. Maybe try on a dark background a la Weston's Pepper Number 30.

My all time favorite go background when I am trying something new is white. I used daylight and one Profoto D1 flash to illuminate the artichoke in a simple manner. No drama. Just a portrait of a what is botanically a flower while I have fun with my new system. Maybe next week I will indulge you.

Thanks for commenting.
