Shooting Boxing

I will be shooting boxing as the official event tog next weekend and as i have never shot boxing before have a few basic questions if no-one minds.

I assume flash is a no-no?
What focal length range are the bulk of the shots coming from?
What is the protocol with ring side and post fight photography? Obviously don't want to get in the way of the paying audience but how do you get the shots without blocking someone's view?

I hope some of you with experience in this can give me a few pointers.

Thanks

John

I've never shot boxing myself but a couple of our customers have. One of them used a 24mm f/1.4 and the other used a 24-70mm f/2.8, and neither used flash. (I assume flash was not allowed but do not know for certain.)

24-70 without flash is the lens of choice for a few people I know who have done boxing.. Thats what I will be using next week at a cage fight event and fingers crossed as well :)

:agree:

Flash is a big no no. If you try and use it you WILL get told off

I tend to try and stay towars the corner Although you may have to move because referees always seem to insist you have more pictures of their ass than the boxers

Thanks everyone.
I'll be speaking with the organiser today and the promoter and managers next week so should have a better idea of what they will or wont allow but thought I had better check with those who have the experience first.

The info on focal lengths is really useful as it means a load of kit can stay in the back of the car and not get dragged around. From the sounds of it I just need the 24-70 on the 5D with no flash for the action and then the same but with flash for the awards etc.

I'll also be taking a few small towels and lens tissues for blood/sweat. Hopefully not mine :)

I thought I would be shooting from a corner as this seems the logical place to minimise crowd interference but again just wanted to double check.

I have also been given the telephone number of a top boxing tog who is expecting a call from me so anything else that is recommended I will post.

Edit: Just realised how that could be misinterpreted. I'm not saying any of you are not top boxing togs :)

I'll post some pictures once done.

Thanks again.

John
