Can someone help me with my landscape photography. Its not something i do a massive ammount of but something i would ideally like to do more of. Before i splash out or start saving for a wide angle lens ive been practising with the wide end of my 18-70mm nikon lens. My question(s) are
1 - what are the focal points ? what do i focus on with a landscape shot , the sky , the furthest hill ?
2 - should i set the lens to focus on infinity, ive tried to understand hyper focal but cant get my head around it
3 - what appeture should i be shooting at , this is really driving me crazy. Initially i thought i should have the largest F number i can , but ive now been told this is wring i should go for the sweet spot on the lens - which is probably around f11 - f16 , but the shots don't look right to me. I use a tripod for support but everything doesn't look in focus and sharp enough. I know all the three questions are linked but could really do with some help

PLease !!

1. Focus about 1/3rd of the way into the scene. Its usualy easier to manual focus, but you can do it through AF. Just make sure the focus isnt set to continous

2.Once you've focused 1/3rd of the way in, the lens might be on infinity, especially if wide angle.

3. f/11- f/16 is right. If you focus 1/3rd of the way in f/11 should give enough in front and behind the focal point to ensure as much of the frame is sharp.

If you shot at f/11 but focused on the furthest hill, everything up until that point wouldnt be in focus.

If you go to my Photoix.co.uk website, there is a downloadble PDF which might help you on the first post.
