Often take the camera with me when walking the dog and was thinking of getting a shooting stick instead of a monopod. Shooting stick have looked at are telescopic, aluminium with a V at top instead of screw or ball head.
Could grip stick/rest camera on hand or stick, would be a bit quicker than screwing camera onto monopod or using QR plate.
Any thoughts?
See link below 6 ft pole weighs 250 grams

I guess it would work well, monopods are after all just a support and as you say quick and easy to rest the camera on, in fact placed at the end of a long telephoto with the camera against the face it may be steadier than a conventional triopd foot mount.

Should work OK. Probably not very stable though, compared to a monopod. Shooting sticks are just a rest, I use the more conventional crossed sticks to shoot rifles from - they do the job but are a bit flimsy

I use a thumbstick quite often for walking, and have used it for resting my camera on (40d with 70-200f4) whist not ideal, it's ok in an emergency. I have now bought a Velbon UP-43 monopod and use that for when I carry camera when walking, with quick release fitted only weighs 12gms more than the shooting staff you mention.
Much better than the V method!

I use my monopod as my walking stick. (From Maplin electronics.)
