Shooting tethered...for free

So I was messing around taking shots of the moon last night as it was so clear, I thought I'd try shooting directly into Lightroom so I could check out the sharpness and quality of the images in more detail. I downloaded the trial of Nikon's Camera Control Pro, which is all well and good but costly after 30 days of use. A bit more digging around and I found this:

A free donation-ware app that allows you to shoot directly into Lightroom 2.0 and up. It even lets you view the LiveView on certain cameras (D300, D700 etc) as well as adjust the ISO/Shutter Speed/Aperture/Storage Device from the computer as well as clicking the shutter. After a bit of messing I've got it so that every image I shoot tethered goes into a folder that Lightroom reads and automatically imports.

Unfortunately its only for Mac users at the minute, however a Windows alternative it would appear is available here but for Nikon users only and I haven't tried this.

I hope this is of some use to someone who wishes to experiment with tethering as I did. :thumbs:
 
I was looking for a way to have a mess with shooting tethered with my D300 to an XP machine, without having to resort to expensive software. Did a forum search and found this thread, used the links provided by Mike, and had a go. It Works! Very strange shooting this way for first time, but it definately works and I can preview raw files directly in Adobe Bridge. Excellent stuff, thansk Mike :thumbs:

Awesome, thanks for posting this Mike, very helpful indeed.

I too was entertaining the idea of tethered shooting but felt a bit iffy about springing for the software.

Nikon dont give anything away im afraid, capture control is quite pricey also, no wonder there are so many people out there getting cracks/hacks/keygens ect just to use something that there competitors give away for free.....mmmmmmm

Nope, ya hafta buy it separately, cheekie ain it :annoyed:

Just tried the mountainstorm beta and it works just fine a with a D3, even live view works! Woo hoo!
 
Nikon Capture Camera Control came bundled with Nikon Capture 4, which is the RAW edit software prior to NX.
It's what I still use, dunno why it doesn't come with NX....well I do, *knock that free tethered software on the ed Nakamoto, we'll flog that off as an extra to the pro's* que HongKong Phooey theme tune

There is or was no Nikon specific software bundled with Nikon cameras anyway, a slight oversight given the nature of RAW image capture.
But its not all bad, its kind of a blessing since its usually carp, if it wasn't nobody would use Lightroom/PS/Elements.
I'm not sure that the EOS utilty isn't quite a recent edition, I remember lots of peeps asking for some Canon tethered software around the time Camera Control came free with Nik Cap 4...:shrug:

Just chiming in yet again to say cheers very much for posting Mike, The Mountainstorm software is working fantastically, it's a little slow but what do you expect with a USB transfer anyway.

It's saved me a fair few pennies as Nikon's camera control was on the cards this year, I firmly agree that it should come with the camera, at least the pro models and was very opposed to shell out for it. Now I don't have to.

The Mountainstorm sioftware looks very impressive from what I read, however there is no support for the 5D or 1Dslll so I can't try it out

Anyway the Canon software works fine, and I can import into Lightroom as well, but it would have been nice to try!

Just seen this :D glad it helps you out in someway Tomas! :thumbs: Yeah it's a little slow in the transfer side but does the job for proofing your images as you take them. I'm not sure if buffering the images to the CF card speeds it up or not :shrug:

Does basically the same as Camera Control Pro, but for free. I do agree it should come with the camera, and the price of the software is atrocious. If it came bundled with Capture NX it might be worth it.
