should you replace UV filters often?

I bought my camera with kit lens this time last year and I bought a UV filter at the same time to offer the lens some protection against bumps and scratches. I have cleaned it regularly, but just wondered if others replaced their UV filters periodically or just waited until they have visible marks or scratches?

I'd just wait until they were marked, if that ever happens.

Not everyone has problems withs their lenses getting damaged, others swear by using them..
