Rodinal 1 hour semi-stand development. 1+100 in 500ml of water.

What does the stand development do for the image?.. wondering if it reduces/increases grain etc... (I have a new bottle of Rodinal (substitute) and am itching to use it.)

In my case it was used mostly because I messed up a roll of film (I shot some Agfa APX 100 at 400asa by mistake) and wasn't sure of the standard development times for that stock when pushed 2 stops. Semi-stand development was recommended as a solution by a few people so I decided to give it a try. Because I didn't want to risk messing up the shots on that roll of film - shot during a trip to Lincoln - in an untested (by me) developing process, I decided to shoot another roll of APX 100 rated at 400asa as a test roll. The shots I've been posting recently are all from that one roll.

Based on these results, I used the same process for my Lincoln roll, which came out well. I'm currently scanning the images and I'm very happy with the results.

I doubt I'll ever use semi-stand development for everything, but I will definitely use it again.

In more general terms, I believe that stand and semi-stand development can increase acutance, resulting in sharper looking negatives. It can also help in high contrast scenes by bringing out shadow detail without losing the highlights. I'm sure someone with more developing experience can explain it better though. :)

Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire around 1995. According to the EXIF (that's the pencil markings on the slide case) they were taken on a KIEV II rangefinder with Jupiter lenses, Film would have probably have been Sensia.

Some more from the Kodak H35N half-frame camera I received from the Emulsive Secret Santa swap last year. The lens is pretty soft on the short edges of the frame, but not awful otherwise - although I have sharpened these somewhat. I also soon realised it wasn't worth scanning them at the resolution I would use for full-frame images.

I was gifted a 35mm roll of Harman Phoenix. I had tried it when first released and found the results quirky and generally underexposed, so decided to overexpose by a stop this time. Still just as quirky! I don't think I'll be buying it with my own money and I'm not sure if I'll hang onto the 120 roll I have in the fridge.
