Shutter noise problem photographing classical music concerts

I had a nice little job last night photographing a classical music concert. Bit of a change from Twickenham!

However, there was a problem. The shutter noise of the 1DIII was quite noisy in the quiet environment of the hall. Even when the music was fairly loud I had some complaints from people.

I did try using Live View to effect a quieter shutter, but in the end it was still quite noisy and disruptive. I had my 300mm with me and ended up taking a few shots from the back of the hall, and also some 70-200 shots from up on the lighting balcony.

So...has anyone had a similar experience and how have you handled it?

Ta muchly.

Tobers

PS - lovely photos at the end of the day in quite challenging conditions. Running a couple of 2.8 lenses (and 50 1.4 sometimes) and ISO up to 2000 resulted in some really nice smooth bokeh on the pics. Lightroom 2.5 cleared the noise up very well to produce some super jpegs for the client.

It has a quiet shutter mode.

Ah. Why didn't I know that. Any idea how to implement it? Just had a look through the menus and cant see it.

It's the 'S' (for silent) on the drive selection

Great - thanks. That really is much less intrusive.

I think the idea is you press the shutter down to take the shot and release it behind your back or out of earshot, if that makes sense.

Yet another useless pro with 'all the gear, no idea':lol::lol::lol::D:D:D

Nice one Tobers, glad you found it.

 Thanks Pete I knew I could rely on you

Not had much call for that function until last night - that's what I like about photography, there's always something new to learn.

You can wrap things around.......

Yes, crisp packets work well.:D

Seriously, you can get a blimp to vrtually eliminate any sound. In the old days of medium format mirrors going "clunk" we had the same problem. Some of that large air bag posting packing stuff might worth trying - or soft bubble wrap? It is quieter than the harder air bags. Not sure how much you would need but worth a try.
