Hi all

A`m in the market for a new/secondhand dslr.

On sh ones they sometimes refer to actuations obviously lower the number the better but what is the usual lifespan of the shutter mech?

depends on the body. Cheaper ones like the 400D/450D are rated for 50,000 actuations. Middle range SLR's 100,000 and pro bodys about 300,000.

But it's not a fixed number at all and they could die long before or after the rated life. Shutter assemblies can also be replaced but sometimes you'd rather just upgrade the body unless it is too cost prohibitive or it's a pro body already.

and it's actually not 'that' easy to get the actual number of activations off the camera. Can be done, using some software, but it is not a readily accessible user counter. Beware because some sellers on fleabay use the image number as a measure of 'clicks' but this only goes up to 9999 and can easily be reset.

Well it is relatively easy.. I use a simple .exe file called exif tool, drop your last shot image onto it and it will give out pretty much every bit of exif data on the photo including shutter actuation.

to a certain extent it is also meaningless.

The figure is a "mean" based on the production run. Therefore some will fail much earlier while some will be much later than the figure shown.
