Shutter Speed D7000

Been having another play with my D7000, when trying to set shutter speed it is just all over the place with numbers.
Done excactly what it says in the manual but it goes from 8ooo/64oo/5ooo/4ooo/32oo/25oo/2ooo/16oo/125o/1ooo/8oo/64o/5oo/4oo/32o/25o/2oo/16o/125/1oo/8o/ and so on and so on.

Cant get anything Like 1/125, 1/160, 1/200, 1/250 ect, ect. like other cameras, are these numbers normal, ? Or what am I doing wrong??
 
What does it say in the manual? you just need to use the wheel by your thumb right?
 
Sounds like you might have a dodgy command wheel. I had a battery grip at one point that did something similar on the shutter command wheel.

Numbers are moving with wheel, but just not in order or even right format.

If you move the wheel very slowly, as in pausing slighting in between clicks, do you see the numbers jump around at all?
 
I don't get it.. Is the first line what you can get?
Cos you say you can't get all the others in the second list but you've written them all in the first list too?

They don't have the 1/ in front, but 125 is the same as 1/125

Also you can set to have the shutter speed in different increments in the menu, make sure its on 1/3 stops, otherwise you'll miss some out.

No numbers move every time wheel is moved even very slowly, one click at a time.

Looks the same to me... are you looking for the "1/" ? It's not there...

What mode is the camera in?

Custom setting menu (the pencil)--> f Controls--> f6 Customize command dials-->Reverse rotation (is it on or off?)
 
Thankls Mate. so what for instance would be 1/250 or 1/600??,
at the other end it goes like this
125o/1ooo/8oo/64o/5oo/4oo/32o/25o/2oo/16o/125/1oo/8o/6o/5o/ on and on
Cant make what these mean?

1/250 etc is shown without the proceeding '1/' and from left to right the numbers should go x250,30,25,20,15,13,10,8,6,5,4,3,2.5,2,1.6,1 (this are shown with the " symbol and are the amount of time in seconds. The next numbers come in less than a second are are shown without the " e.g. 1.3,1.6,2,2.5,3,4,5,6,8,10 and so on (increasing shutter speeds).

Yes mine are the same as this. so where is 1/250, 1/600 in these numbers.
In the Nikon D3100,they went in order in 1/00 1/200 ect.

Well they are in order but it might have different shutter speeds to your d3100, there is no 600 but 640 instead.

If you set a shutter speed number - say 80, them press the info button on the back so the whole back lights up it should show you that this will be 1/80. This is normal & correct. The numbers under a second do not show the 1/.....
The numbers over a second will show a " after the number.
 
you need to check weather you have 1/2 stop or 1/3 stop exposure set if you use 1/2 stop you will see less shutter speeds displayed as it removes the ones in the middle hth mike

menu b2 ev step for exposure control set it to 1/3 step

Are you sure? I don't think it shows it as anything different on the back display.

The numbers he has written above are already 1/3.

I think the thread is overly confusing, because from what I can see his numbers are all correct and in the right order and the dial is working in the right direction. I think he is more concerned that either theres no 1/ before it or that it has different ones to his D3100.
 
I can,t believe that the op dos,nt know his shutter speeds but is happy to spend out on a d7000!!!
get yourself on a photography course ;)

On a D3100 you only have a rear screen & this shows the shutter speed with a 1/...

The D7000 has a top screen - This only shows the actual number.
It also has a rear screen but not normal active - thats why I suggested pressing the info button - this will utilise the rear screen & the the OP can ck the shutter speed (it will be similar to the D3100).
 
what about the fact you can see the shutter speed in the viewfinder :banghead: you don't have to check the top screen or the rear screen.
 
Do a factory reset and start again. Having a new camera is all new and exciting and sounds like you've either altered something or completely misunderstand the basics ... it might not be the camera that needs the reset ;)

it is phil but people word things wrong and buy gear they have absolutely no idea how to use then start asking noob questions about a camera that is way way above there ability. i stupidly thought as he had a d7000 he had a problem with his camera but seriously he needs to get on a course or let everyone know he,s new to photography then we can be more helpful/sympathetic. some of his statements are beginner level but he did not suggest he was a beginner in any way. i only sussed that out by looking at his other posts and lots more of the same.and the comment about going on a course even if only a one day beginners course was genuine and not meant to sound derisory. sorry if it sounded that way.

well unfortunately i have to agree with you there the forum has had its fair share of "warriors" on it but if you think i said anything that was either not helpful or derogatory i apologise unreservedly. usually enter my help/critique et al to help people but things get mired taken the wrong way etc. my comment about going on a course or maybe joining in on a tp meet still stands.if you needed help on understanding shutter speeds this is what you should have asked as in your first post i thought your camera had a problem hth mike.i'll add a note if you really want to get a good start in learning photography its equipment lenses and all check out this web site its the single best one for a beginner i can highly recommend.

OK,I am a complete beginer, and have a lot to learn which you will see I have suggested, time and time again, if you would like to go back and read All of my posts since I started on this forum. I have even said that I Need to take a course and or, lessons, which I am planning to do.
There is some Genuine people on this Forum which have and are willing to help beginners like me, and they are really appreciated.

Everyone was a beginner once so if you have more questions, just fire away...

You have now got a great camera but as you are discovering it is a lot different from the D3100 - better in every way ...

Keep practising

DON'T try & read the manual in one go - pick sections at a time - I'd read pages 35-47 first. That may assist you.
