Shuttercounts?

I'm not sure what is expected of the Nikon cameras, but for my 40D they say 100,000 is the the expected life.

At 100,001 it gives up!

It's how many times you've released the shutter ie how many pic's you've took. If you were to buy a second hand camera with say 90.000 shuttercount that wouldn't be as good as one with 10.000 assuming they're were the same model & age . HTH:)

Yeah thanks I read that already! hehe.

I'm just wondering more of what it is and what a good or bad count is.

As you guessed in your OP, it's the number of shutter actuations. On cameras without video or live view then it pretty much equates to the number of pictures taken. If your camera has video or live view then the shutter also opens when those features are used too.

GOOD = any number up until BAD-1 :)
BAD = the number when it fails :gag:

Some people get too hung up on how many actuations the shutter has had as if it'll get to the manufacturers' estimated limit and then fail. The chances are it'll go on way beyond that but there is also a small (perhaps miniscule?) chance that it'll fail at No.1 too.

HTH :D

This will make me sound like an idiot but what is Live View?
I don't think my camera has it? Nikon D80.

Nope, live view is when you can see your image on the LCD screen similar to the compacts, its only recently D-SLR's have been fitted with it.

Shutter-Counts are something else for the male-jewellery-lovers amongst us to fret about as they polish their unused cameras and worry that the IQ on their equally pristine lenses isn't good enough...

If they actually used their cameras they might lose value...*shocker*

I use my D70/D80's for timelapse photography, the D80 has 154,000-ish actuation's the D70 has 230,000-ish last time I looked

They are retired now but still working fine.

Had a small repair done to the electrical contacts on the bayonet fitting on the D70 but that is all.

Will i've seen your location as Hexham, which is also mine... Do you go to QE?

My Sony A300 (now sold) had live view and I felt sure that it didn't open the shutter in live view mode.

I'm quite prepared to be told I'm wrong since I didn't take it to pieces to check how the thing worked, but I assumed the light reflected off the mirror into the viewfinder pentaprism was used to feed a separate sensor for live view.

The way I view shutter count is like a clutch on a car. It's gonna go sometime but when is anyones guess - I did 240k in a diesel Astra on the original clutch but only 14k in a BMW Z4. I wasn't expecting either to last/fail so long/soon!

It is a service replaceable part after all and (pls correct me if I'm wrong guys) not a really major expense to fix anyway.

I'd be more concerned with the general condition of the body as an indication how the camera has been treated, there are other things that can go wrong other than the shutter mech!
