These seems to get great reviews, and are a relative bargain at the moment. I'm keen to hear opinions from anyone who has one - and if the AF speed and accuracy is there or there abouts to the canon 100L version.

Had one and hated it, changed it for the Nikon version
I really didn't like the barrel extending when I was close to things, much prefer the internal focusing of the nikon
and TBH the noise got on my nerves too
 
Thanks for the reply, are you sure you're talking about the newer HSM OS version? Pretty sure it doesn't extend when focusing.
 
Yeah its the old one that was external focussing, slow and sounded like a tractor. Fine if you had a relatively static subject.

The L lens I'm told has a better IS system because its in 3 planes, but its horses for courses I guess and the Sigma feels heavier. May be worth getting in somewhere and trying them both?
 
I have older non OS version of this lens, in fact I have had it for quite a few years now, and have used it with a 30D, a 7D, and now a 5DMklll, Although my other lenses are Canon L series, I have never felt the need to upgrade from this Sigma, as the image quality is 'top notch'

Thanks for your input Dave. I don't doubt the IQ, it's AF speed and accuracy, as I will be mainly using it as a general portrait lens.

me to actually one of my best lenses :thumbs:
 
Ive got this lens, albeit in Nikon version. The AF is very noisy and slow, OS is very noisy. I think is these things are high on your list of priorities, you will be disappointed with the lens.

It is however a great macro lens, I use mine manually. IQ is great also

Have never used it for portraits Joe, only ever macro, and for that I have always preferred manual focus.
