I am thinking of buying a second hand sigma 12-24 mm lens to use with my D700 (I cant afford the nikon 14-24) On another post on this forum site the person said it was hard to find one that was not de-centered. What does this mean?

De-centered means that you have uneven sharpness (ie soft left side, sharp right side).

I've had to go through 3 to find one that is OK. A decentered one looks like this (soft right hand side)

A good one is VERY good by the way, a bad one will be probably sharp in portions of the frame only. These lenses are very prone to de-centering so it seems. A good one is very good (but not in the ballpark of the 14-24), a bad one is eye watering bad.

I have seen one advertised by a dealer, (not on ebay), for £300 in mint condition.

thas not a bad price (edit to add) nowdays - I sold a minty one for £450 not long ago, and they are now around £650-£700 new - if its worth that or not is another debate, but get some test shots (of a brick wall) before you buy it

I will ask the dealer if I can buy it on a sale or return basis, I hane bought from them before so hopefully they will let me do that.
