Hi there,

I have a Nikon D200. I am looking at getting a Sigma 150-500mF5/6.3 Lens for it. I have tried out one at a shop but when I tried to focus the lens was jumping around and did not focus properly.

What camera (focus) setting should I have the camera on to ensure the lens does not jump around when focusing?

I am going away in a few days so I am keen to get some advice today if possible.

Thank you for any advice!

I have owned this lens in the past and never had any AF problems on my Nikons and the only time I seen the image jump around was when the OS was kicking in and it was very brief tbh are you sure it's not a faulty lens ?
Is it new or used ?
And did you try it out on your D200 ?

So it sounds like it it simply not locking focus on anything so continues to hunt focus? A couple of things spring to mind but firstly this is a long lens with a matching long minimum focusing distance of something like 3m. I haven't got my lens to hand to check exact numbers but I do know that I need a lot of space to focus on anything indoors. The other thing to bear in mind is that is that it needs quite decent light to grab focus.

I have just tried out my Sigma 150-500mm os on Canon 50D and no issues with this combination even indoors low light.
Just be aware if you are on the cusp of the MFD you may then encounter AF problem with lock up or hunting.

I had this happen to a Sigma 120-400,it would jitter in and out of focus, good light and good subject, dont know what the problem as when my dealer tried it he exchanged it straight away.

Thanks guys - used lens, tried one in overcast conditions on the D200 at the shop but it was jittering about a bit, didn't know whether it was the AF selection on my camera or the fact it was very dull and I was using it at max length 500mm.
If you have any ideas on what camera setting to use to get the best out of the focus then please let me know?

Have you Tried cleaning the lens contacts on body and lens mounts ?
