Ive just read this comment on this lens
the 17-70 is ridiculous!
i cant believe that thing can focus so close
dont believe what the specs say on that lens...it really can focus on the filter...

Any comments please true or false:thinking:

a bit of context would help!

Whats the question?!

Is someone saying the lens is focusing on a UV filter attached to the lens?

The talk was about a walkabout lens that will do a bit of macro, one person suggested the 17-70 and another person came with the above comment i wondered wether he was talking bumkum or sense, yes he was saying it focuses on the filter:)

well its a very nice lens, but it doesn't focus that close - even if you were to paint a "X" on the middle of the UV filter, the lens wouldn't be able to focus on it.

He's talking rollocks basically :)

Ok thats what i wanted to know:thumbs:

Having just got mine at the weekend, I can say it will focus very close, but not that close lol.

if memory serves mine will focus on things touching the lens at the 70mm end. It's not particualrly usefull like that and still not a true 1:1 macro but it is quite impressive.

My 17-70 does focus very very close but as people have already mentioned it doesn't do true Macro and not as close as the filter.

the magnification ratio is 1:2.3

also closest focus is about 1.5" -2" from the tip of the lens hood (i just tested it)

The Sigma 17-70mm lens is a great walkabout lens which is also ideal for portraits and the bonus is that it can foucus very close to an object for macro work. A fantastic lens all round.

Here here! Just got one myself as a walkabout as I wanted something a bit lighter and with slightly more reach than my Tamron 17-50 F2.8. For the money you can get these for second hand they are a steal.

i also have a 17-70...got it to replace my sony 18-70 kit lens.mainly use it for my landscape shots now, since i got the 24-70 F/2.8,but i may replace it with a 10-20 or similar,so i'll have 10-280mm covered(200+1.4 TC).i did use it on the odd occasion for some close up work, and it performed very well
