Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my 18-55mm kit lens, and I think I would like one of these two lenses:

Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5
Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS

I guess I'm looking for people's opinion on these lenses - I tend to use my 18-55mm when just walking around.

I also have a 50mm f1.8 and a 75-300mm f4-5.6.

OR is there a different lens, for around the same budget (£200ish) that I should look at - I don't mind buying 2nd hand!

I'd look for the Tamron 17-50, Its a great lens.

:plusone: You may get a greater range with the 17-70, but the 17-50 has a constant f/2.8, and I've read somewhere (can't remember where) that the 17-70 stops down from f/2.8 as soon as you zoom away from 17mm, therefore the largest aperture is only at the widest angle, which, arguably, is where you're least likely to need it.

Also, you can get the non-VC version of the higly rated Tammy 17-50 for, on average, only about £50 more than the 17-70. It6's definitely worth saving the extra pennies for

I used to have the canon 17-85mm and it's certainly a step up on your 18-55 kit lens, but not as solidly built as you'd hope for a canon lens. Pictures are sharp with good contrast and nice vibrant colours though, it does distort a bit at the extremes of the range though

Don't know the sigma 17-70, but have got a Sigma 18-125mm optically stabilised lens, that's around the £200 to £250 mark new and is very nice - less distrotion than the canon, and in my opinion better value that the 17-85 canon.

Cheers - that's some more for me to look at. In no rush for this, so more opinions welcome!

I had the Sigma before my 24-105L. It's a very good bit of glass. No IS but I don't really think it's needed at these focal lengths. I miss it very much as a walk around lens, light and very usable. Good build quality, I was always happy with the IQ. Good VFM in my opinion.

Ive had a Sigma 17-70 since I got my digital camera, use it as my standard lens on both my current bodies, gives good quality images, it only operates at 2.8 at 17mm but that is not a problem for me, it is well built, robust and in my opinion very good value for money

I chose the Siggy in preference to the Canon because it's sharper, better built and has a great close focus.
