Why is there such a big price difference, is it jus the HSM or the IQ is also better on the HSM version.

would they be good on a D700 and would the body driven focus make up for the HSM.

1. Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro £400 ish

2. Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG HSM £740 ish

I tried to get some revies on them on http://www.photozone.de but couldnt find any.

See if you can find Puddleduck's views on the HSM version here on TP.

I have the older, non-HSM version and love it (on a D700). Mind you, it cost me less than the current 2nd hand price when I bought it new at the begining of the year.
 
I also have the non HSM version. it's a really nice lens.

Well... from what I've seen the HSM is sub-par considering the price. Actually I'm being diplomatic with sub-par...

I've got the older version here as stop-gap since selling my 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S, and it seems a better lens (better than the HSM, not the AF-S) - Can't honestly say the 24-70 older version blows me away either.. its excellent on my D50... not used it much on the D700.
 
I've got a non HSM up for sale :D

Always been happy with the IQ. I just wanted to get a little wider on my D300.

Too be honest, I don't think the Sigma 24-70 is good enough for a D700.

OK.. that'll probably ruin my chances of flogging mine....but I see quite a few lenses and neither the 24-70 HSM or 24-70 non HSM are good enough by my standards. Its good on crop though.

Certainly they don't hold a candle to the (10 year) old Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S.

Wouldnt mind your lens but trying to get it past the wife with it coming out the bank would be a nightmare as we are both saving for a special gift:cuckoo:, will think about other ways of doing it.

Not many.

BTW now Paul's had sold, mine is in the Classified.

I'm much cheaper than his too, which is why I was waiting for this to sell first :)

I am just looking for a walkabout lens but with good IQ for publishing because I have a couple of projects coming up soon. Something in the range of £500-£600 would be great that leaves me just enough to get my D700.
There is the Canon 5dmk2 with the 24-105 L f4 for £2500 which is my budget but I really dont want to move to Canon I love the way nikons are made and feel.
 
The £500 budget it tricky, I'd probably recommend a Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S, but you'll be looking close to £800 not £500. And there is the Nikkor 24-70 which is a £1k lenses, even used.

IMHO the best choice without spending a forture is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Di for about £300.

Its a super lens, and I've ordered one for my Sony A900 which is VERY demanding on glass. I'm confident it'll be fine, and its stellar on the D700.

I wouldn't put a Sigma 24-70 on my Sony A900... I'd put a Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S on my Sony if it would fit!

Thank you I will give the Tamron a look you sigma looks clean if still had my D300 I would have considered it but you are saying its not worthy of the D700.

Dont think theres much in it as the one i have taken has the filter and postage included. Im happy with the purchase and hope you sell yours on soon.

Mine will be on the D300 which im hoping to get on with. Its a starter type " all in one lens " for me as im wanting to photograph horses and other pets along with some general type of landscape. Once i get better then i might consider changing for specialist type lenses but its a throw in your bag type of lens which will come out when the need arises.Will sort payment out tomorrow.:thumbs:
