I've just ordered a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM. from all I've read it can hold its own with the big boys ( Nikon in my case ) for less than half the price. Anyone have it? Thoughts?

The Nikon 24-70 is in a different league.

Read the Photozone review or PhotoclubAlpha. Both sites pan it on full frame bodies.

Anyone saying its as good as the Nikkor, is either mad, blind or both!
 
I know all about the Nikon and I'm not saying it's as good on FF, but on my D80 and possible future D300 and at a third of the price, and I have already got 2 Siggys (10-20 & 150 f2.8) that I'm very pleased with it just seemed a logical choice.

The 150mm macro is awesome which shows what Sigma can do when they put their mind to it.

TBH as you've got a 10-20 already, I would have gone for a used Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S lens if you needed f/2.8, or a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.
 
I have one and I love it. OK, I havn't compared it against the Nikon but personally I can't fault it.

I can't imagine that Sigma wouldn't put their mind to a lens of this spec considering the standard set by the majors that they would be hoping to take business off, would you? But also I have found Sigma a pleasure to deal with when I've telephoned them for technical advice or to order anything.
 
I had the Canon fitment version and it felt good to use and worked well but it was hellishly soft wide open. Razor sharp at F8 as you would imagine though.
