Yes
I just recieved my sigma 30mm 1.4 and was testing out the low light capabilities on it along with the DOF. It performed brilliantly. I was particularly impressed at ISO 2000 how little noise there was. The 50mm 1.8 is great but this is even better, check it out

the BEST lens for video...check the 85 1.2... :P

sweet footage, I'm so wishing nikon would get their act together video wise.... otherwise in a year or so, the RED scarlet is going to be very very tempting...

85 is too long though especially on a 1.6 crop, I found the 50mm a bit long thats why I think this 30mm is better, it has a great wide aperture and also perfect focal length for video.

that red scarlet doesn't look cheap! well in comparison to a 7d of course, but for obvious reasons

I too am considering the 30 or 50mm Sigma 1.4. I am leaning towards the 50mm because it is apparently more usable at 1.4, but a little worried 50mm (true 80mm) will be too restrictive.

I still cannot understand what 24P offers over 30P or why so many people consider it so imporatant. After all, 99.9% of people will watch their 5D/7D footage on an LCD/Plasma and not at the cinema.

You have to try some manual focus lenses as FD 85mm f/1.2 (as isdavedotnet said) , Carl Zeiss lenses, etc...

That would be amazing lenses for video...

Huh? £2k of gear to take a clip of a kids cot?

I'll admit I don't get the whole video "thing" ....

where did you get 2k from?

I don't think you really understood the clip. I wasn't about filming a kids cot, it was about showing noise, focal length and focus performance at low light.

watch this and it might help you "get" the video thing

not sure I get you, it's not about watching it at the cinema, 24p just looks better simple as! no matter where you watch it

yeah I'm sure, but still 85mm on a crop is too long in my opinion. I should have said 30 1.4 may be the best lens for video under £350 I'm sure there are some unbelievable lenses above that price bracket

Why exactly is that? Surely 30FPS @ 1920x1080 are better than 24FPS @ 1920x1080? I have played both 24P & 30P back on my Panasonic G10 1080P plasma via PS3 and I cannot see any benefit of 24P whatsoever. The only difference visible to me is that panning is smoother on 30FPS for obvious reasons.

I guess if people like judder 24P is better.

The reason is that 24p looks more like film and 30p looks more like video. If you don't see it then it's just not your taste or opinion but for most people they prefer more of a film look to video thats why it's such a big deal to them.

At 24 frames you get more motion blur and smearing at 50 shutter speed which results in a more filmic look.
