Hello, need to pick your brains on this one, has anyone got/used this lens? Feedback on it would be greatly appreciated as thinking of buying a second hand one.

Cheers

Steer clear of the non APO version and check all for fungus/dust in the lens carefully, the older manual focus only models I think are slightly better and it can be a little soft wide open.
The tamron and tokina 300 or 400mm F5.6's where sharper and better so worth looking out for.

Thanks Ian,

It is the APO version so may have a look at it. Will keep an eye out for the Tamron and Tokina lenses to.

I see you shoot Sony, so need to be careful. There is a very good chance that this lens won't work with new bodies at all, certainly early versions only work with Minolta 7000, and 9000 film bodies from over 20 years back.

So get the lens serial number and ask Sigma UK if this will work. Chances are it won't... ask the seller explicitely if he's used it on Sony Alpha bodies.

Thanks Andy, he says he has used it on the old version of the a230 which is the 200. Sale ends in 2 hours so won't press any further.

What are both your thoughts on the Sigma DG 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 APO HSM...?

Appreciate your advice..

Oh.. well if it works on the A200 it'll be fine on the A230. Most of these are sold on Ebay as not working with newer bodies...

Can't comment on the 120-400mm, never seen or used it (well actually I briefly used the Nikon version last year and I thought it was :gag:) but never seen the Sony fit version I'm afraid!
