No
I have the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 at the moment and cannot afford a new lens. But i need more zoom for motorsport

Is the sigma 70-200 with 2x converter any good for motorsport ?

The 2x converter will stop the lens down to f4 and give you 140-400mm, but that would be fine for motorsport I imagine

The 2x will take your lens to f5.6, the 1.4x will take it to f4.
I assume if the light is good you will have no problems with using the 2x.

I uses to find the 2x TC on the older 70-200 (pre-macro) quite good, but the recent macro versions perhaps haven't had the sharpness at the long end to get away with a TC.

I'd try the 1.4x first and only the 2.0x if your particular lens is sharp wide open at 200mm.

it'll hammer the focus speed, something that's essential for motorsports

Mine is also the pre marco lens

I have looked at 1.4x TC but that will only give me 280mm. That is still very workable at the race track i normall go to. Some points i would need to do alittle cropping and that would mainly also be for bike racing.

The only thing that worries my about the 2x TC is people have said IQ will drop alot and the focus speed will also drop alot!

If you have the pre macro version give it a go. I used to use this lens and a 2x for street candids in Tokyo and it was excellent (sharp at 400mm f/5.6) - admittedly this was on a Nikon D70s which was very sharp "per pixel"

I didn't shoot fast moving things with it though.

I have the MKI Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and the lens goes everywhere with me .. I also have the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. The 2x loses some IQ and the AF does slow down quite a bit but with the 1.4x it's hardly noticeable.

I used the 1.4x the other day on a Falcon up in a clock tower .. notice the bird top right. LINK

Now a 100% crop LINK

To be honest I was very pleased with how that came out considering the shot was handheld. I know its not motorsport but should give you an idea of IQ with the 1.4x.

Thanks for that

I think i will go for the 1.4x TC. IQ looks good and focus speed should also still be good. The 280mm should give me a good amount of zoom for the race track i go to the most. That being Mallory Park. I may have to crop alittle if there is a bike meeting but for car meeting 280mm should be fine.
