I was after and still am after a good lens with a longer focal length than my 70-200mm could offer. However a not terribly well listed old EX 2x tele converter with cosmetic damage popped up on ebay the other day. As no one was bidding I thought why not its worth a try. Anyhow it just turned up today so I have stuck my head out the window and taken a few shots.

What do you think? Not brilliant I know but I am pleasantly surprised. I think it will at least let me know if I really require the longer lens or not.
 
Assuming you have a good sharp sample of the 70-200 then a 2x TC will work well.

A lot really depends on how good your lens is - a 2x TC is always a stretch, although I found this combo (on a Nikon D70s which is very sharp) surprisingly good.
 
Thanks for the comment puddleduck. I will try and shoot something that does not move so fast next time and see how they come out. Sparrows are fidgety little things. Even the starling would not stand still.
