sigma 70-200mm with a 7d

sigma 70-200mm apo ex dg macro & canon 7d.

anyone using this combo or have had issues with them, im after getting the canon 7d but have come across a few people
who have had problems, mainly the AF wont work.

the newer sigma mk2 macro seems to work ok with the 7d so im guessing all of the earlier versions will have problems aswell :shrug:.

i also read that sigma can re-chip the lens but i havnt found out how much that would cost yet, im happy with
this lens & would love to keep it but its looking like i will have to find a replacement for it, unless its a
cheap fix from sigma though i doubt it or maybe a firmware fix ?.

Is it just the 70-200 that has the problem? I just put my old 70-300 f4-56 apo on my 7D and it works fine, though if it is very out of focus it just seems to decide it isn't going to focus but if it is close-ish, it works just fine.
Oh and going back to normal gindy focus motors after using usm lenses for so long is a bit of an eye opener...
 
im not sure john, i was only looking into the 70-200 but i'd be surprised if its only this model that has this problem with a 7d.
 
Canon does not licence any other company to use there eos mount and chips. So companies like Sigma backwards engineer to get their lenses to work with Canon cameras so when canon alter their cameras Sigma then have to alter their chips to keep pace. Something to bare in mind if you are buying sigma lenses what happens 5 years down the line when Canon have upgraded 2 or 3 times and you buy the new body and the lens does'nt work with it and has been discontinued for a newer model so chips are not availble any more

thanks richard, i never realised the lens makers had to rechip them to work with the newer bodies until the other day when looking into this 70-200.

im going to contact sigma & see what they have to say about my lens & then go from there

It's been going on for years i bought into the eos system back in 1989 a canon eos 600. I bought a sigma 400mm 5.6 apo a couple of years later the lens worked fine. I then upgraded to a canon 50E in 1995 guess what the sigma lens did'nt work with it thats only six years between bodies and only about three years between the purchase of the lens and the new body that said i have a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG and that is every bit as good as my Canon version.

I came across this issue when I was looking at one as well, in the end I went with the mkII version. A lot of people state that the mkII can be soft wide open and the mkI is sharper but digging into it I never really found anything to back that up. There were soft examples of both lenses. My mkII is fine and only cost £50 more than the mkI's I was looking at.
 
i spoke to sigma today & they said its the early version of the mk1 that needs chipping, they did ask what the serial number of the lens was but as i didnt have it with me i couldnt provide it, so there is a chance that my version could work ok.

the price to get the lens chipped is £34.73 & tbh i didnt think that was to bad as i was expecting it to more than that
