Has anyone used this lens to go with a D40
Sigma 70-300mm/APO-DG-(built-in-motor-Nikon)-f-4/5.6-Macro-AF-Lens

Any comments would be apreciated before i decide if i am going to buy. It says it will auto focus with the d40 that would be a nice change rather than paying of a nikon lens at more than twice the price.

Im thinking about buying this lens too, so any critics or comments would be really appreciated.

I have the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro and find it to be really good but I don't have a D40 I havd a D3000 if that is any help.

I have a Sigma 70-300mm Nikon but not APO. Its very slow to auto focus and is very noisy. The manual focus override is not all that great the focuse shifts on its own as there is no real resistance. The Macro is not really a Macro as its a world away from 1:1. The Macro switch has a habit of sticking on somewhat. Also it will only let you use the macro function at 200 to 300 mm zoom. The lens hood is quite cheap and nasty. I don't know how the APO version differs though, generaly the APO Sigma lenses i have had have all been great.

Edit: my lens came with my camera and is used so it may just be broken

As far as i know its pretty similar to the tamron, and thats bloody awful with the autofocus and the manual focus has the same problem of no resistance, unless you really need the extra 100mm id go for the nikon 55-200

i have the nikon 55-200 but find it a little too short for when trying to photo the birds in my garden. Got the lens yesterday so going to give it a go tomorrow weather permiting. I will be fetching it to the manchester meet on Sunday if anyone who is going want's to give it a try.

if you can deal with slow noisey focus the 70-300 is alright, i used it as a stop gap before getting a 70-200 *200mm was plenty for my use* but thats alot more cash

If I want to take photo of birds in flight, is this lens too slow? And if yes, which lens do you recommend?
