I am due to pick up my new d90 with the 18-105 zoom lens. I have also seen
Sigma 18-50mm f3.5-5.6 which is advertised as a wide angle lens. Would this be
Worth having as another starter lens or is it exactly the same lens as the 18-105
But to as long??? I know there are many lenses out there but I'm looking for opinions
On this lens. Any comments would be appriciated.

Thanks

Perosnally if your just starting out I wouldn't worry about having two lenses that cover the same length as you already have that range covered...

Could possibly look at something a tad longer than the 105..

The 18-105mm lens you are getting already covers the save range as the 18-55mm, so I don't see a need for it.

I'd start with one lens and see where you feel your missing out, either not wide enough or doesn't zoom enough, before buying a 2nd lens.

I would stick with one or the other, i've got the 18-105VR & i like it ( no idea about the Sigma ) but there is little point covering the same focal length with two lenses unless one is faster than the other but both lenses are f3.5 in this case so nothing to gain.

No such thing as silly questions, just questions

Thanks guys, it is advertised as a wide angle though. That's why I thought it may be worth giving a go? Its really cheap aswell?

You already have the "Wide angle" part covere in your original lens, it would be no different.

One thing to remember with lenses as a general rule of thumb is you get waht you pay for, don't expect great results from cheap lenses...

That 18-50mm Sigma lens you mentioned is THE worst lens currently available!! DO NOT BUY IT!!! :shake:

The 18-105mm Nikon is a decent place to start, and as has already been said, don't buy cheap.....you'll only waste your money!

Simply put, 18mm on one lens should be functionally identical to 18mm on a different lens so only buy something so similar if it is a vastly better lens - which the Sigma 18-50mm isn't.

So don't buy it!
