the rubber eye-cup on my Canon A1 has become quite hard over time

not brittle...yet....cannot source a new one

- anyone know of a safe method of softening the rubber..?
 
It might be too late, but soaking it in Armor All might help. I use it on rubber and plastics on my motorcycles; it preserves them a treat and keeps rubber supple.

Surely you can find a new eyepeice on eBay? Wierd that Canon wouldn't make spares.
 
Try soaking it liberally in Vaseline for a while. Failing that there's one on ebay currently....
