I found this the other day on my living room ceiling. Having identified it and assured myself it wasn't a night flying moth I enticed it outside. It wasn't very happy about it but it was for its own good - as soon as I open the door I get a house full of flies and have to spray regularly, and I didn't want to harm the moth. It clung to the shady edge of one of my planters - not the ideal for photography. Never work with animals..........or huffy moths..........
Small magpie moth is its name. It is a different species to the magpie moth, which is larger and more colourful. This is about 3/4 in across. It's apparently quite common, but while I've seen magpie moths before, this is the first small magpie I've seen. I don't have a macro lens so this is a large crop.
