I've done some, instead of a joss stick, Maplins/RS sell smoke pens for airflow throughput testing which produce a really fat smoke trail, which helps with the focussing.
Some hints,
Use a decent depth of field to get sharp images.
Shoot quite a few shots because of the focussing issue and the room filling with smoke!
Vent the room to the outdoors, not somewhere with a smoke alarm!
I was using an off camera flash with a wireless trigger. Best results were with the flash to one side and slightly pointing forward to minimise the flash hitting the black background.
Works well in a darker room, rather than in bright sunlight - I was shooting in my conservatory.
