Snow Leopard Re-install Help

Ok so my iMac has been going slow for a while now and i am thinking of giving it OS X Snow Leopard a Reinstall.

I have a back up via time machine but was wondering would it be better to reinstall from that or do a fresh and drag the stuff over i need..? If i drag stuff over how will this work for applications..? Would i have to find the system files as well..?

Also any other help regarding cleaning my mac up for it goes fast will help.

I tend to do a clean install when I do it but it depends on how many apps and other guff youve got on your computer. Time Machine is a backup so whatevers slowing it down would just end up being restored as I see it.

Ive also done it by making a new partition, installing SL on it then using Migration Assistant to move the apps/docs etc over.

Yes that is what i was thinking but from the looks of the video you can select just to install applications so the problem may not occur again if its system.
 
To be honest time installed slowing down is not normally a macos problem. I would investigate why it is slowing down. Look in utilities and run macos's equivalent of task manager. (sorry I'm on my phone and it's name has just left my head but it's near the top of the list). Check memory,CPU and HD to start with. How much space on the HD? anything clogging the ram? What is being run when the computer starts? (go to your user editor and click on the startup tab).

What is your computer's spec? If it is a few years old and you keep updating to newer versions of software they can be more taxing.

Activity Monitors what youre looking for. I personally use

iStat Menus

to keep an eye on RAM/CPU load etc.

Most my built in HD is free i have external ones hooked up, and checked the whats running when it starts up. Just think its getting old, has a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo but only 2gb of Ram it doesnt want to take anything in the 2nd slot.

Just annoying when i export a video out of FCP n its take over n hour for a 4 minute video :bang:

Yes i use that, a lot of the time is LR is open its pretty maxed out on the CPU.

next time it seems like it's slowing down check the console log. If there's any errors repeating over and over it could point to the problem. Might take a bit of googling to find out what to do. It's a process of elimination, usually a boring one too. Have fun!

Its all the time exporting videos i will look into it, thanks.
