Yes
Thought I'd just have a run through this afternoon and see if anyone had decided to pinch any photos from my Flickr stream so that I could send them a nice little invoice :naughty:

I normally do it every now and then more in hope than expectation but, this time, success! One result returned

Marvellous I thought. One invoice on it's way, thank you very much.

Sadly, it was just a link in a blog back to Flickr from a stream that appeared to be pulling a specific tag word :(

Oh well, maybe next time!

There's some programme on the internet you can use to trace all of these, do you know what it's called? I'd normallly search, but ......................

Yes you do, and you can only do an image at a time, which is not much good when you have thousands of images on Flickr like I do!

However, I did use it once and discover that MySpace had nicked an image of mine, and were allowing users to download it as a wallpaper for their profiles. I contacted them and they asked me to prove the image was mine...which I could do...and they removed it pronto.

do you have to paste a link to each and every photo you want to check ?

You can take the url from one page on your Flickr (for example) and it will load all of those photos on to one page, but you then need to click through on each to check to see if there are any hits.

It's time consuming, but worth it if you land a result.

Tin Eye [and maybe others] only work by searching for the file name. If they've changed that then it won't find the picture.

I dont know if thats true, Ive found one of my images on someone elses Photobucket using Tin Eye and its been renamed and slightly edited.

I used Tineye for the first time yesterday and found that one of my pictures landed 40 results. Does that mean that it has been used 40 times elsewhere? It didn't seem to make sense though as some of the pictures were different to mine. I got a little confused to say the least!! It's not hard to confuse me though :D

I just tried TinEye and I'm not convinced by it. There are a few of my images that I know are used on other sites (legit) but it still comes back with 0 results for those. :suspect:

This has gotten a bit confusing now. In its earlier days it specifically stated on its site that renamed images wouldn't be found. It doesn't say that now, and maybe they've changed their search technology. However, it's muddied further by this on their FAQ page......

TinEye finds exact and altered copies of the images that you submit, including those that have been cropped, colour adjusted, resized, heavily edited or slightly rotated. TinEye does not commonly return similar matches, and it cannot recognize the contents of any image. This means that TinEye cannot find different images with the same people or things in them. If you are interested in finding similar images, try visiting the Idée Lab!

...... if it doesn't recognise the contents, then how?

Must be magic..

I found one of mine from the Natural History museum that had 3 links. I checked each images and they are NOT exactly the same as mine. They are all taken from the same spot and obviously the light stays the same in the museum. The thing that is different in each is the amount of people walking on the steps in the images.

I just checked a heap of my images on flickr and photobucket that I know are elsewhere because I have put them elsewhere.
Zero results everytime.
