Grr!
Thankfully not an expensive one,but my favorite and the one i use a lot for portraits..
About a week ago the wife was having one of her usual "re-arranging" days, and managed to drop my 50mm on the floor.
Since the drop, the AF is out.. At close range-it still seems fine, anything over around 10ft or so,and the focus is off. (Camera still confirms and beeps etc-But images are not focussed where they should be)
Sooo ..Could use some recomendations for a good portrait lens-Preferably without breaking the bank or requiring a remortgage! :)
At least the 50 makes a novel paperweight.... :'(

While i was peeved to find the nifty a little worse for wear-I must confess its a good oppurtunity to use the wife's endless apologies to my advantadge.. (oooh im evil)..
As such-a better lens is definately on the cards!
Liking the look of that 85 1.8 USM..

Hate to state the obvious but... another fifty? If it was one of the expensive fifties, get the nifty. Under 100 quid and still great lens.

I have to say i'm a convert to the USM lenses from Canon - a world away from the cheap plastic mount jobs in terms of feel, and much quicker and more responsive AF. In fact, the 85 1.8 is better in that respect than the 1.2L (mainly because of the size of glass that the 1.2's AF motor has to heave around )

I'm a manual focus man myself for a variety of reasons... but yes, the nifty fifty really takes the cake concerning cheap plastic feel.

It's also not a great deal of fun if you DO decide to use manual focus - the focusing ring is tiny and under a 1/4 turn lock-to-lock. If i'm going to be manually focusing, give me my old Yashica 50mm 1.7 anytime.

"THE" Wife !!!!!!

If I happened to be your wife and you referred to me like that it might be more than the lens that got damaged :D

if you were his wife, you'd probably be more careful with photography equipment though i'm guessing ;-)

i think 'the wife' is a rather polite term considering she's just smashed a lens of his!!!

I use MF all the time on some very peculiar lenses and have no problems; in fact I get consistently better results than AF can ever hope to achieve on my body ;) plus two of my four lenses are fully manual anyway...

That's very true, if you'd tidied it away when she said, it would never have happened

ehhhh u have a golden opportunity of getting the 50 1.2 free and instead here u are throwing whining jokes about your wifey. Think if your wifey decides just about to check "what my hubby got to say on those internet places" :shake:

If I were in your position Id launch a never ending guilty trip at how mean and clutsy she is until she gets you pretty much anything u desire

unless of course u are the man of the house, she doesnt work and u end up having to give her the money so she can buy you a new thing :p

I bet you are getting the blame, with the classic excuse of ' not putting it away '

Think she was going to try that one..
But then saw the look on my face and remembered when she (somehow-Dont ask me how) knocked one of my shiny new surround speakers off the wall, and into the 5ft aquarium she was cleaning out at the time-again...i wasnt impressed :D

Btw-Thanks all-This place always puts a smile onto my face, and reading some of the replies...well .. LOL!

Reckon she's telling you to get a professional in to do the cleaning :)
Might work out cheaper too.

85mm f1.8 is an absolutely stunning lens, alternatively a 100mm f2.8 macro - doubles as a nice portrait lens, plus both give you a nice body upgrade should 'she' drop that too.
