I recently bought a 24-70 F2.8 L from here but on my 7D it seems to be really quite soft. What's the best/easiest way to micro adjust the lens to see if i can make it better on my main body?

Get the camera set up on a tripod and point it perpendicular to a flat object like a wall but it obviously needs something that it can focus on so not a blank white wall etc. Take 3 shots every 5 points apart, so 3 at -20, 3 at -15 all the way to +20. Review the images to work out which is sharper then fine tune once can see which area the best setting will be.

The tripod is the most important part of this advice, I had a friend trying to micro adjust a 50/1.4 on a 50d without one, and got very mixed results!

should i do it at 24 or 70mm or somewhere in between - and at what fstop?

Yes.

You need to understand how the lens performs across it's range and aperture values (although the smaller the aperture, the less important it is). I have literally hundreds of photos when I calibrated my lens.

i'll take a couple tomorrow and post them up - see what you guys think.
