Software for EOS 450D

Morning All

I recently purchased a 450D on eBay. The camera is excellent but the seller has missed out various bits which have resulted in a certain amount of to-ing and fro-ing.

It's taken a week to get the interface cable out of him (he seems to have lost the original and has sent a generic one instead). Now it's become clear he hasn't sent the CD that contains the various applications such as DPP, EOS Utility, etc.

I've asked him to send it to me but he's away for a week blah blah blah. He's also saying that I don't actually need the software and it's second-rate anyway. He says I should be buying Aperture, Lightroom etc. He has offered to refund me the £18 it would cost to buy the CD from Canon's approved 3rd party.

The bigger part of me thinks that I should just plug it into the Mac and iPhoto will upload the pics no problem, but another part of me is wary of the instructions that state I shouldn't connect the camera to the Mac without installing the software first. I know it's extremely unlikely, but I'm concerned I might damage something.

At the mo then, I've got a new-to-me camera with a ton of pics to upload but I'm stuck in no man's land.

Would really appreciate views on what I should do.

Many thanks in advance.

Gary

Take the SD card out, stick it in a card reader and download the files onto your hard disk rather than messing about with a usb link. In the meantime, take his £18 refund and get a copy of the EOS utilities on CD, if you want the tethered shooting and so forth that the EOS utilities provide. If you've been shooting raw, then there are lots of different ways to process them, not sure where you'd go on a mac, but i'm sure there are cheaper ways than Aperture/Lightroom/CS5...

Is Canon's software not downloadable from their website? I downloaded EOS Utility when I bought a 2nd hand 350D last year without software. No CDs required and I still don't have DPP.

I did already have ZoomBrowser installed from a CD though, as I have a Canon compact, so I don't know if that made a difference.

Bit cheeky of the seller to be telling you which software you should be buying, imho, when you just want what should have come with the camera.

Only updates available now on the Canon website although you can fool the registry into thinking the original is there

Yep, I download from a card reader as well.

I used to download direct from the camera, but I once forgot to unplug it for about a day, with the result that the next time I wanted to use the camera the battery was completely flat.

The other side of the coin is that you have to remember to put the card back into the camera when you have finished :$

Thanks all for your responses.

It appears I know as much about photography as I do about my iMac....turns out the thing's got an SD card reader in the side of the monitor. Downloading pics to Mac as we speak.

Head hung in shame.....

I've got an original and genuine 450D disc you can have if you want?

Hi Mickledore

Many thanks for your kind offer. Thank would be fantastic but I could only accept if you were 100% sure you wouldn't need it.

Thanks.
